DUNEDIN CENTRAL ELECTION. By Telegraph. —Press Association DUNEDIN, Dec. 18. Mr Statham has applied for a magisterial recount for Dunedin Central. ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Bert Cornfoot, a member of the crew of the steamer Maori, met with a serious accident on board his vessel at Queen's wharf this morning. He fell from the upper deck and fractured both his feet. After first aid had been given he was removed to the hospital.
DROWNING ACCIDENT
GISBORNE. Dec. 18. Eru Tercre, aged 68, was drowned while crossing the Waiapu river. PASSING OF THE GERMAN PERIL. NEW' ZEALAND TO EASE RESTRICTIONS. AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. The Minister for Defence made two interesting statements this evening.
It was suggested that since the oceans had now practically been cleared of German raiders it might be possible to remove some of the restrictions on small vessels entering and leaving the principal ports. The Minister agreed and added that the authorities had under considertaion the matter of .considerably reducing the garrisons at present being maintained at the forts. Mr Allen was asked whether the Samcan garrison might not also be simtflr'j ly reduced. He replied that this was different. Tt was absolutely necessary that a sufficient force should remain in Samoa in order that proper control could be keut over the colcured races resident in the islands.
PRISONER CHOKED TO DEATH
WELLINGTON, Dec. 17
The police gave information yesterday that a man named Illingworth, who was arrested at Pcngaroa on a charge of vagrancy, choked himself while an inmate of a prison cell.
BREAD FAMINE IN GISBOENE

GISBORNE, Dec. 18
Gisbome bakers anticipate a bread famine having only a fortnight's flour supply. The schooner Orete had a sail blown away and cast her anchors at Hicks' Bay on the voyage from Auckland.
In the Magistrate's Court Edward Hooper, a young half-caste law clerk is charged with embezzlement, amount ing to over a thousand pounds. The case is proceeding. Later: The accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to Auckland for sentence.
