OPINION OP AN EX-MINISTER
AUCKLAND, Dec. 11. Mr A. M. Myers, member for And:
land East, in a statement to-day, said: Recognising that the maintenance of law and order is the first essential of
government and progress, I am satisfied that Sir Joseph Ward would not accept the responsibility of forming a Government unless he was assured of absolute support to give him the necessary support to carry on a progressive and prudent policy.
HON. GEO. FOWLDS INTERVIEWED.
AUCKLAND, Dec. 11. The Hon. Geo. Fowlds, in an interview to-day, said; As the Government
party is the most homogenous, they ought to have the best chance cf carry log on the Government of the country. Even if Sir Josepn Ward gpt three out cf the four Maori seats, that would only give him 41 to 39, and when he had elected a Speaker his majority would he too slender to do much real work. It appears to me that the best thing the new Parliament could do would be to pass a Proportional Representation Act and give ai! the people a chance of being represented in a Parliament elected under that system. Mr Fowlds added that such an Act could be made operative in the course of a few months, when the Government could appea-l to the country for a definite margin.
