MODERN “ MIRACLES.”
ATTRIBUTED TO EARTHQUAKE. ARE MIRACLES EXPLAINED. Some wonders were achieved by the earthquake which violently shook New Zealand on a recent Sunday night. Dr. Martin, of Wellington, was treating a youth who had been suffering from complete paralysis from the waist downward during eighteen months past. When the patient felt the earthquake the powerful mental effect produced by the shock caused him :o jump out of bed and run across the room. Questioned by a Times representative yesterday, Dr. Martin reported that his patient has completely recovered, and the doctor attributes the cure to the earthquake which occurred eleven days .ago. A similar case is reported from Napier. A hemiplegic patient named Harry Hallinan, who had been in the Napier Hospital for the last two years with the lower half of his body completely paralysed, is at present rejoicing at the results of the recent earthquake. The shock so affected his nervous system, states the Daily Telegraph, that he recovered the partial use of the leg which was the more seriously affected of the two. The case is an interesting one, and Dr. Gilray and his staff are watching It closely. The improvement may t;e only temper, ary, but there are faint chances that it may continue.
Those cases throw some light on a number of the seemingly “ miraculous ” cures which are cited as having taken place from time' immemorial up to the present day. A medical man
explainted to a Times representative that these recoveries are simply a result of powerful mental eifect —in most instances excitement of some kind.
