The Bookmakers. Only the most optimistic thought that the resolution passed by the Racing Confer e,uce„ forbidding beating with bookmakers by owners, trainers, and jockeys would seriously diminish the business activities of the layers of odds (writes a New Zealand correspondent of Melbourne Winner). It is impossible to ascertain how much money has' changed hands in straight cut, double, and treble betting on cup week races; but it must have run into a large sum. The interesting literature circulated by the “wool-brokers” regarding the November “clip”—our friend the. bookmaker is fend of this little joke, despite the inevitable comment that it has a significant connection with “ fleecing'.''- has been as plentiful as ever, and the number of amateur metallicians with double charts, which go to the rounds of factories, shops, and cilices, has, if anything, increased. Some of these small fry run “ doubles ’’—each selection being laid only once —on nearly every meeting in the country. Occasionally one hears of a prosecution by the police. The other day, for instance, in Auckland, one Joseph Parnwort h was fined £IOO for street betting. But if that penalty checks Joseph there arc plenty of others willing to run the risk. One would think there was profit in bookmaking.
