MIGRATION VIGILANCE EXERCISED IN CANADA
KEEPING QUOTAS DOWN AUSTRALIANS HELD UP Reed. 10 a.m. VANCOUVER, Wed. It is believed no new restrictions on white immigration are to be imposed. The only restrictions applying are in respect of the amount of money in jiossession of an immigrant and a contract for labour, due to the current depression and extensive unemployment. With the coming of the autumn and winter, the immigration authorities are more closely applying these qualifications than at other times. The contract for labour regulation is of years’ standing and prohibits the entry into Canada of immigrants under labour contracts, except in cases where the Minister of Immigration decides that their presence is required. The Immigration Department at Ottawa, moreover, has denied reports from Vancouver that 200 Australians are seeking entry to Canada, and that they are being held up and some of them are in danger of being sent back. Officials states that only one or two Australians are detained. The restrictions on immigration into the United States are of a similar nature. It was announced at Washington a few days ago by the State Department that on account of the unemployment in the United States, Consuls abroad have been instructed to examine applicants for quota visas more closely, with the purpose of limiting the number of entries under the provision in the law which enables their exclusion when there is a danger of the applicant becoming a “public charge.” Ordinary travellers are in no way affected either in Canada or the United States.
