SHORE BUS FARES

PENNY INCREASE ON THROUGH TICKETS CONCESSION FARES UP Fares are to be increased on the routes operated by the North Shore Transport Company. This was decided yesterday at a sitting of the No. 2 Licensing Authority, when the company was granted leave to make an increase, the new scale of charges to become operative on Monday, September 29. There will then be an extra one penny on all through tickets, and an increase of twopence on the 12-trip concession tickets. Ordinary cash fares and children’s tickets will not be affected by the change. In supporting the application on behalf of the Transport Company, Air. L. Alderton said that it was necessary to have an increase in order to meet the handicap imposed by the iucreade petrol prices and also the increased petrol prices and also the charges proposed were expected to meet these additional costs, but that was taking into account the fact that the company was assuming there would be a good summer trade. On behalf of several Takapuna residents, Mr. J. Guiniven opposed the increase and said that he did not believe the statement made by the company concerning the additional running costs. The present prices would be reviewed by the Prime Minister in March, and it was probable that they would be restored to their normal level. Mrs. Blomfield, representing residents of the western area, also opposed the application, intimating that the present service was far from being “up to the mark.” It was decided to grant the application, the company giving an undertaking that in the event of taxes on oil and petrol being waived, the question of fares would be reconsidered. SERVICE PROPOSED Considerable discussion was caused at the meeting when an application was brought forward by (he Marine Suburbs Bus Company, Limited, for authority to establish a bus service from Highbury Corner, Birkenhead, to the Northcote Wharf. Evidence was still being heard when the meeting was adjourned until Friday afternoon next. Air. Alderton. who appeared for the* company, said that the company had been the pioneer in motor service in the district, but it had been out of business for the past few years. It was now in a position, however, to carry out a most efficient service. The existing services were inadequate and the fares excessive, he said. The company proposed to establish a service to cater for residents in Onewa Road and Calliope Road, who were not at present served by buses. The fares to be charged would be a flat rate of fourp'ence for a single trip and a concession of 2s 6d for a 12-trip ticket.
