“CURING” OYSTERS

SUGGESTION TO MINISTER “NOT UP TO STANDARD” THE SUN'S Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tuesday. An unusual state of affairs in connection with the marketing of oysters was referred to in the House this evening when Mr. W. Lee Martin (Labour —Raglan) said that he had heard that if oysters were kept for three weeks they would consume any food in the shell and fatten up. If that were correct, he suggested that the Marine Department should see that oysters were kept in store until they were in good condition. The oysters put on the market during the present season were not in good condition. The Minister of Marine, the Hon. J. B. Donald, said that he regretted that the quality of the present season’s oysters was not up to standard. Mr. IT. T. Armstrong (Labour — Christchurch East): Has the depression anything to do with it? The Rev. Clyde Carr (Labour — Timaru)-: Or bad business methods? Mr. Donald resumed his seat without referring to the “curing” process mentioned by Mr. Martin.
