AVONDALE CUP FANCY DOUBT ABOUT STAR STRANGER According to his trainer, Star Stranger is by no means a certain runner in next Saturday’s Avondale Cup. It all depends on the weather and ground conditions. This morning Star Stranger moved attractively in company with Cylinder over six furlongs, and lie did not lose any friends for the Avondale Cup. The trainer, J. H. Jefferd, wishes it to be known that at present Star Stranger l cannot be regarded as sure to start in the Avondale Cup. The big Martian gelding is known for his antipathy to a soft or wet track, and if more rain falls the suburban course will be anything but hard, although the rich gro’wtli of grass will assist to make good going. It is expected that Star Stranger’s real mission is the Mitchelson Cup, run at Ellerslie a fortnight later, but it is more than probable that if the Avondale course- rolls out nice and hard on Saturday he will be numbered among the competitors. This early warning by the trainer of Star Stranger should be appreciated by early speckers. There is nothing wrong with Star Stranger’s condition. and he appears to be much more forward now than he was at this period last year. Even on that occasion the Martian gelding beat all but Piuthair in the principal handicap the second day.
