WILL HISTORIC WIN?

AVONDALE CUP PROSPECTS GOOD GALLOP AT WANGANUI There is a disposition to favour Historic for the Avondale Cup, to be run on Saturday. The big chestnut gelding has had a couple of races lately in sprint events, and judging on his showings in those outings, he is very forward. Historic put in an appearance at Avondale this morning, and perhaps lie will be given a gallop tomorrow morning or on Thursday. With the possibility of Star Stranger being an absentee from the Cup field, at least one dangerous candidate will be out of the way to the Trentham representative. It is stated that Historic was given a good gallop at Wanganui last Saturday morning. This was over a mile, and after he had loafed over the first furlong he finished up from the seven furlongs in 1.31. That was good travelling, especially as the track he worked on was dead after heavy rain throughout the night. B. H. Morris, who thoroughly understands Historic, will be in the saddle again on Saturday. The gelding is not at all badly placed to repeat his last year’s victory, despite his big weight.
