A DEAD TRACK
AVONDALE COURSE OPEN THIS MORNING’S TRIALS Conditions were pleasant at Avondale this morning and quite a few gallops were witnessed. The outside of the course proper was available, the trestles being out 75ft. The going was very dead and only slow times were recorded, but nevertheless the work-outs were of interest. The first workers were Star Stranger (H. Gray) a'nd Cylinder (light boy). They were sent six furlongs, and the latter immediately went to the front to open up a three lengths’ gap crossing the top. Once in line for the post Gray began to urge Star Stranger along, and at the judge’s box he had got to within three-parts of a length of Cylinder. Did It Weil Cylinder was always going easily, hut Star Stranger impressed by his strong run over the last bit over a journey that was not long enough to enable his stamina to tell. They ran the first furlong in 13, the two in 2G 3-5, v and the first three in 42, the six furlongs taking 1.25. Cylinder has thrived on his ratat Wanganui and is going to be a better horse when he is sent out for the Avondale Guineas next Monday. Maori Boy (L. Dulieu) was let off with an easy task, his six furlongs under a pull being run in 1.27 1-5. the last half-mile taking 59. Vanessa ran five furlongs in 1.9, the last four furlongs occupying 50 2-5. The filly picked up Takarunga at the four furlongs and they finished on terms, with Vanessa much the more Te Aroha Hacks Miss Albyn cleared away from Indolent over the last furlong of a halfmile sprint, despite the fact that she covered more ground, being right on the outside. Her time was 55 2-5, the last three taking 41 1-5. Jaeldy Karo and Day form were sent over the same ground. Dayform was ridden out and they finished together, the time being 50 3-5. Jaeldy Karo did it easily and could have clipped off a good bit of time had .it been necessary. Silene finished up pace work by sprinting home four furlongs in 50 Volimond, looking very well after her outing at Ellerslie last month, was given easy work over a round. Worked Nicely Black Mair.e finished very resolutely to beat Claremore by a * couple of lengths, with Armenia three lengths farther back, at the end of four furlongs in 55 2-5, the last three taking 41 3-5. Black Maire impressed and should not be long in coming to hand. IJoniton jumped off behind three ! others and was not asked to go I against the watch, being allowed to | take her time to record 5G 3-5 for half a mile. This filly is not engaged !at the Avondale meeting, but will be I secn out at Ellerslie early next month. There appears to be nothing wrong | with her condition. The Best Four It was left to Mosaic and Grand Tea to register the best gallop over half a mile. This pair, with Branson, hopped off from the peg, Mosaic being required to concede a couple* of lengths start. Over the last furlong Grand Tea was in the van, but Mosaic came at him and the pair crossed the line on terms in 55, the last three furlongs taking 40 1-5, with Branson about two lengths behind his companions. Considering the start Mosaicwas forced to give, it was an excellent gallop on his part. Grand Tea could have done a bit better. Both these horses should give a good account of themselves this week-end.
