EARLY SUCCESS

DEVONPORT LENDING LIBRARY | Reporting on the activities of Li*Devonport Public Library Citizens Committee. Mr. Frank de J. Robin, secretary, states: “Although it is barely five months since this semi-municipal department was added to the borough activities, my committee feels it is fulfilling its mission of service to the C3iumunity, catering for its literary needs and recreative well-being so far as financial limitations have permitted.” The number of subscribers to the lending department is 189. and 400 books are always out on loan. The number of volumes in the lending branch is 1.500. The number of books in the reference department is 2,300. and the secondary school students, in particular, have found this section of great value. The lack of accommodation for readers seriously limits the use of the reference department. To date the committee has disbursed £220 6s 3d and has a bank balance of £53 2s Id, of which .£ls 15s was subscribed specifically for a building fund. This is to be added to a previous bequest to the borough of £SO for the same object. The staffing of the library is carried out by volunteers, members of tho committee taking turns at t the work.
