REP. FIXTURE LIST TOO LONG CITY CLUB’S COMPLAINT Dissatisfaction with the existing Pollard Cup competition and a suggestion that the trophy be awarded for a senior knock-out competition next season were features of a letter received by the Auckland Rugby Union Management Committee last evening from the City Club. The letter referred to lack of interest in the competition as played this season and the consequent difficulty in fielding teams. The suggested knockout competition would shorten the series and retain the interest of players. A further suggestion was that the list of minor representative fixtures should be curtailed so that the Gallaher Shield competition could be continued for longer than it has been this season. “The present season has been very disappointing for those players who have not been fortunate enough to be selected in representative teams,” the letter continued. “The British tour, the tour of the representative side in the North Island and the time taken up with matches against minor unions in Auckland has meant a discouraging time for many of our senior players. The cooling of the heels of many, to the benefit of a few, does not appear to be in the best interests of local football nor the best means of improving the standard of play.” It was decided to inform the club that a special committee would be going into the questions raised in the letter in readiness for next season. -
