NEW MOTOR-SHIP

PARRAKOOLA IS MODEL VESSEL GIRLS AS STEWARDS Comfort for the passengers is the chief concern of the Swedish motor-ship Parrakoola. which reached Auckland this morning via Niue Island from San Francisco and Sweden. She carried 21 passengers, several o£ them Swedish people who are on their way to Australia. One American has arrived to spend a holiday fishing in New Zealand. Three girls attend to the needs of the passengers and wait at table, thus doing away with the usual dining saloon stewards. Kverything on the ship was spotless, from the steam-heated double cabins to the paintwork of the rails. The journey from San Fre.ncisco was made in 17 days, with a call at Niue Island to take on bananas and copra. FRUIT AND COPRA There has been a drought on the island and the fruit season has been delayed. The Parrakoola was to have taken 2,000 cases of fruit for Auckland but she was able to load only 1,600 because of the dry season. However, the drought had broken by the time the vessel left. Also on the vessel were 30 tons of copra. Although the new motor-ship is primarily a cargo boat, she makes provision for her small consignment of passengers. They have plenty of deck space and a swimming bath is erected for their use on the forward deck. After discharging at New Zealand ports the Parrakoola will go on to Australia and will then sail for Kurope, her first port of call being Dunkirk, in France. The vessel expects to make a trip to New Zealand once every six months.
