PLAYING LONDON CLUBS
AUSTRALIA MAKES 278 BRIGHT BATTING DISPLAY LONDON, Saturday. j The Australian cricketers began to- | day a match against a team from the London clubs, which was chosen recently by the ruling body, the Club Conference. The players, who were of a fairly high standard, were: Whitehead, Newman, Pearce, Summers, Brindley, Nazeer Ali, Taylor, Jarvis, Smith, Percy and Grinter. These players were bank clerks, accountants and estate agents, and similar club members, who are con- 1 fined to Saturday afternoon cricket. The Australians, who won the toss, j batted first, and had their initial ox- ! perience of the larger stumps. They 1 were all out for 278. There was a fairly largo crowd to see the match. Bradman gave a bright exhibition of batting for 75 minutes. He hit five fours, but was missed early by Nazeer Ali, who mulled an easy catch. Fairfax also had an early life in the slips. Smith, who is a rather fast bowler, shaped well, as did Brindley, who is a medium-pace bowler. He represented Ceylon against Australia. The indifferent light after luncheon caused Woodfull and Kippax to take no risks, and they were unable to force the pace. Woodfull was caught in attempting a big hit. Kippax batted soundly. The club side suffered from dropped catches. They should have dismissed Australia fairly cheaply.
