NORFOLK ISLAND TRADE
SIX-WEEKLY SERVICE ARRANGED DEFINITE ANNOUNCEMENT The steamer Hikurangi is to maintain a six-weekly service between Auckland and Norfolk Island. This announcement was made this morning by Captain G. George, a member of the firm of James Smith and Company, which owns the Hikurangi. Captain George is the vessel’s master.
She arrived in port this morning from her second trip to the Island in an attempt to revive trade with Auckland. While there Captain George held a conference with the Norfolk Islanders, where various points touching on the then proposed service were discussed. The Islanders guaranteed to support the Hikurangi if a definite time-table were arranged. As a result of these assurances, together with the encouragement the owners have had on this trip by way of satisfactorily large cargoes both ways. It has been decided to maintain a service as stated. On this occasion the Hikurangi’s cargoes, both inward and outward, were in excess of those taken on the first voyage. She is now at King’s Wharf discharging her return cargo, which consists of 1,300 cases of oranges, bananas and vegetables, and a quantity of fruit pulp.
It is the aim of the vessel’s owners and also the wish of the Norfolk Islanders, that the ship should institute a c&rgo service between Auckland and Noumea calling at Norfolk Island both ways.
