WINNER AT LAST

'CHASE TO MONTGOMERY SPORTS AT DOMAIN After a season of consistent starting and occasional place-getting. Jack Montgomery won the steeplechase event in the sports held by the Auckland Amateur Athletic Association at the Domain on Saturday. He ran second in the 5i miles cross-country contest at Ellerslie a few weeks ago. Last Saturday’s run was 1£ miles. The fastest time in a field of 20 starters was gained by A. B. Browne, who took Bmin 35sec. Times generally, however, were slow, owing to the heavy ground. With one lap covered, Montgomery was in fifth place, behind McNiel, Wheeler. Clark and Henry. After another half-lap, Henry passed Clark, and at this stage looked like a winner. With a round to go, Montgomery crept up on the leaders, and took control 300 yards from home, to win by 15 yards from McNiel, with Henry 20 yards farther back. The winner ran a well-judged race.

Browne finished in fifth place, with Wheeler ahead of him. N. Cooper’s ankle was hurt just before the start, and he was well back at the end. F. L. Adams received a shoulder injury when he slipped and fell at a hurdle. J. Green finished second in his heat of the sprint event, in 7 3-ssec. and pulled off the final by knocking one-fifth of a second off that time. H. Hogg made, a good throw' with the discus, and E. C. Wooller was once again robbed of the winning points by a couple of feet. The return of J. C. Tipping to the competitions after a short absence was announced by a win in the shot-putting event.
