SHAMROCK V. ADMIRED BY AMERICAN SPORTS

IN TRIM FOR CUP RACE ENTERPRISE WELL FITTED British Official Wireless Reed. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, Friday. The first of a series of races for the America’s Cup, in which Sir Thomas Lipton’s challenger Shamrock V. will compete with the American yacht Enterprise, is due to take place on Saturday week. Meanwhile the greatest interest is being taken at Newport, Rhode Island, in the rival craft, and Shamrock V. has received much admiration from the Americans. The two yachts are a striking contrast. Enterprise has a towering mast and below deck an impressive display of mechanical accessories, designed to increase her speed, while she possesses also a selection of 13 mainsails suited to all varieties of weather. Shamrock V. is depending on less elaborate methods, and below decks she is empty of mechanism, except for Ihe halyard winches, while she lias only three mainsails. Nevertheless Sir Thomas Lipton’s confidence in her is established and American sportsmen are impressed by the way she has moved during the preliminary runs. Shamrock V. will be taken from the water on Monday for the final overhauling before the race. There is a spirit of greatest friendliness between the rival officers and crews.
