A KING’S HOUSEHOLD
STRANGE REGULATIONS In the library at Buchanan Castle | there has recently been discovered an old scrap-book which contains, among i other things, a list of “Directions for i the Household of Henry ye Eighth.” By permission of the Duke of Mont- j rose, this list has been published in the “Countryman” as an example of I the system under which a Tudor Royal Household was conducted. It is as : follows: t His Highness’s attendants are not :
to steal any locks or keys, tables, forms, cupboards, or other furniture, out of noblemen's or gentlemen’s houses where he goes to visit. Master cooks shall not employ such scullions as go about naked before the kitchen fire. No dogs to be kept in the Court, a few spaniels for the ladies. Dinner to he at ten, aud supper at four. The officers of the Privy Chamber shall be loving together, no grudging nor mumbling, nor talking of the King’s pastime. The King’s barber is enjoined to be cleanly, not to frequent the company of misguided women. Coal, only to be allowed in the King's, Queen's, and Lady Mary’s I Chambers. The brewer is not to put any brimi stone in the ale. 1 Among the fishes at the table, the j porpoise, if too big for a horseload, an extra allowance for the purveyor. Twenty-four loaves a day allowed for his Highness’s greyhounds. Ordered that all noblemen and gentlemen at the end of the sessions of Parliament, depart for their several counties on pain of the Royal displeasure.
