“DEFY THE COUNCIL"
REV. JASPER CALDER IS STERNLY REBUKED REMARK ABOUT BY-LAW For advising business men to defy the City Council’s proposed by-law banning certain colours for painted signs, the Rev. Jasper Calder, who made the remark to the Auckland Advertising Club on Tuesday, was sternly rebuked by Cr. T. Bloodworth at yesterday’s meeting of the council. “At the Advertising Club’s luncheon Mr. Calder referred to the council’s proposals as a ‘piece of impudence.’ ” said Cr. Bloodworth. “Fie deliberately asked people to defy it. ... I submit that it was not the proper kind of conduct tlie council is entitled to expect from a gentleman who has received every consideration from the council. “If I or any of my colleagues at the Trades Hall were to adopt a similar line we should be branded as Bolsheviks and the police would be put on our tracks for inciting people to rebellion,” continued Cr. Bloodworth warmly. “I think Mr. Calder should at least have used more moderate language or have taken the trouble to find out what was in the by-law before he spoke.” Cr. G. Grey Campbell, who is secretary to the Advertising Club, assured the council that the club had not approved Mr. Calder’s utterances. “The club cannot be held responsible what a man says when he gets to liis feet,” he declared. “I myself took strong exception to the remarks of the speaker. The Advertising Club had not considered the question of the by-law at all. Our members are men of the calibre who like to hear both sides of a question before they pronounce judgment upon it.”
