PROSPECTS FOR TOMORROW

APPLEDORE’S CONDITION Special to THE SUN WANGANUI, Thursday. Not very much light was thrown upon the Marlon meeting by the work at Wanganui this morning, though there were a couple of gallops on the outside of the course proper, with the flags well out. Appledore and Vertigern were sent five furlongs after breakfast, when the weather was dull but line after a light shower. The pair had light-weights up and the former was going well at the finish, the distance having been covered in a shade over I.G. Appledore responded well when asked to move halfway up the straight, and finished in a manner that was pleasing to his trainer. Appearances indicate that the Rossendale gelding will be the elect of the stable for the Wanganui Guineas, though ho is still susceptible to a good deal of improvement.. Perhaps a little later in the season fie will be found playing a fairly prominent part in classic and weight-for-age events. He will be ridden at Marton by B. H. Morris. Paratoo, Count Palatine and Grecian were companions in a six-furlongs effort, but were not pushed to finish abreast. They took 38 for the last three and there was nothing much wrong with that. Zarene took 38 2-5 to cover three furlongs and went well, proving that she is in good fettle. She will bo reserved for the five-furlongs event at Marton and should not be far away at the finish. Arvada and Jack plane took just under 53 to cover four furlongs, but it looks as if the company at Marton is going to be a bit hot for Jackplane. The Thespian filly, Arvada, is much improved as a result of her race at New Plymouth. Several others did useful work. It looks as if Zarene is the only local horse likely to be seen at her best at Marton. It will be interesting to see how Moroney’s team shapes.
