NEW STREAMLINE DEVICE The Federal steamer Somerset, at present in Auckland, is the first vessel of that line to be fitted with the Oertz streamline rudder, the invention of a German. During her voyage from Liverpool to New Zealand following on the fitting of the rudder, it proved a great On a steamer like the Somerset, the new attachment enables fuel consumption to be reduced by 10 per cent., or alternatively, an extra half-knot can be added to her speed on the same fuel consumption. The device also aids steering and the Somerset’s steam steering gear now needs only 401 b pressure of steam instead of 1201 - Stream-line rudders have been fitted to 750 vessels, representing 3,720,000 tons. * !
