UNLICENSED LAND AGENT

FINE OF £lO IMPOSED From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Today. A serious view of the case in which John William Moreland was charged with holding himself out as a land agent without having a licence was taken by Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court today. Defendant had told the police that as he was only letting and not selling houses, he considered he did not come within the scope of the Act. Counsel pointed out that defendant had confined his dealings to garages and small flats. The magistrate disagreed with counsel that the regulation was badly framed. The regulation was meant to be wide to protect the public. A fine of £lO would be imposed, the magistrate stating it would have been less had defendant not had a previous conviction for theft.
