ALLOCATING PETROL-TAX

MOUNT ALBERT OBJECTION The Government’s action in not making provision for the payment to local bodies this year of 8 per cent, of the 6d petrol-tax, met with much disapproval at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening. A letter was received from the Prime Minister stating that provision was made for the payment of the full 8 per cent, of the 6d tax to local bodies over 6,000 population next year, but owing to financial exigencies, this could not be done during the current year. According to Mr. A. A. Buckley, motorists in Mount Albert were contributing very largely to the fund, and the council should receive the 8 percent. this year. The borough had a very heavy burden to bear and its main streets carried many times more traffic thau main highways in the country. It was decided to write to the Government objecting to the change.
