SANDRINGHAM TRAMS

ADDITIONAL EXTENSION TO BE BUILT SUCCESS OF DEPUTATION The Transport Board expressed itself favourable this morning to the request of a recent deputation of Sandringham and Mount Albert residents for the extension of the Sandr'ugham tram track to Vincent Road, instead of only as far as the intersection of Mount Albert Road and Sandringham Road. After the board had received reports from the engineer and the secretary, it resolved that the extension to Vincent Road from Mount Albert Road bo called ‘‘Sandringham extension No. 2,” and that it be carried out provided an amicable agreement he arrived at between the board and the Mount Albert Borough Council about the setting back of the western corner of the intersection of Mount Albert and Sandringham Roads. Reporting, the secretary, Mr. W. St. J. Clarke, said that the request of the deputation was a reasonable one, provided that no alteration was made to the third section end at Calgary Street. The distance from Calgary Street to Vincent Road along the proposed route was approximately 66 chains, said Mr. Clarke. In the event of construction of the extension, he recommended that the present bus service between the third section at Calgary Street and Harlston Avenue be discontinued. It is the board’s practice to lay curves with a radius of 80 feet, and to obtain this it is necessary to cut back the western corner of the intersection of Sandringham Road with Mount Albert Road, and it is considered that the Mount Albert Borough Council should be responsible for such cost, said the secretary. The extension involves the construction of 34 chains (.42 miles) of double track, which, with the necessary trolley wire equipment, is estimated to cost £11,500, reported the engineer, Mr. P. E. de Guerrier. “In order to avoid the duplication of drawings and applications and also a second Order-in-Council, both No. 1 and No. 2 extensions have been included in one book of plans. I ask that this be signed by the board today so that an advance copy can be forwarded to the Public Works Department immediately and its approval obtained while the signed plans are on deposit at the board’s office. ‘‘The reason for urgency is that at the end of September men will have to be transferred from the Mount Eden extension and it is desired to commence the No. 1 Sandringham extension during the first week in October, and thus avoid reducing staff,” said Mr. de Guerrier.
