YOUNG “CON. MAN”
TRICKS SHOPKEEPERS OUT OF £3 STORY OF “UNCLE” Press Association HAWERA, Today. A boy is reported to have exploited knowledge of local conditions to work a confidence trick at Hawera on Saturday. Aware that the Hawera railway station booking office clerks frequently obtained small change from a confectioner’s shop opposite the station, the hoy obtained £3 from a woman shopkeeper on the pretext that his “uncle” in the booking office wanted £3 in sixpences and threepences. The request was not unusual, but when asked for the notes in exchange for the silver the boy said his “uncle” would bring the money to the shop later, as he was busy at the moment. Shortly after receiving the money the boy returned with Is Gd, stating that his “uncle” was returning it as it was in excess of the correct change. The shopkeeper subsequently inquired at the booking office and found that no boy had been sent. Subsequently a boy was apprehended at Stratford.
