CROSS-COUNTRY TITLE
TEAM’S RACE TO OTAGO Press Associatton WELLINGTON, Saturday. Leading the field for practically the whole of the distance, R. A. Rose, for the first time won the New Zealand cross-country championship at I-lutt Park today. The teams’ race and championship shield went to Otago after a stern struggle with Wellington for the honours. 'Throughout the best part of the race Wellington was prominent in team work, but in the dying stages Otago took command and won by a comfortable margin in points. Although Rose was the first man home the individual championship goes to H. J. Brown, of the Wanganui-Tara-naki centre, as the former was not eligible to receive the title, not being a member of a team. Brown was prominently placed throughout, but his victory was due to his final finishing effort. The Canterbury men were not conspicuous individually or as a team and never looked like winners. Following are the individual results:—Brown (Wanganui-Taranaki), 41m 3-os. 1 ; E. J. Johnstone (Otago), 42m 2 3-os, 2; A. L. Stevens (Wellington), 41m 50 2-ss, 3; J. S. Barnes (Otago), 4; R. M. Bamcr (Canterbury), 5: A. Mann (Otago). 6: C. McCarthy (Wellington), 7; N. F. Cooper (Auckland), 8; J. W. Tapp (Otago), 9; A. Barclay (Wellington), 10. The teams’ races resulted as follow: —Otago (2. 4. 6. 9). 21 points, 1 ; Wellington. 32 points, 2; WanganuiTaranaki. 59 points, 3; Canterbury. 62 points, 4; Auckland did not finish as a team.
