SPEED-TRAP CHARGES FAIL
UNRELIABLE TIMING SYSTEM Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. On the day of the Rugby match between Britain and Canterbury, the Selwyn County Council set a speed trap on the Main South Road at Durisandel, when 187 motorists were timed as having speeded. The nrst prosecution was taken before Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., at Leeston today. The magistrate dismissed the case on the ground that the method followed in operating the trap was unreliable, and that there was no evidence that the stop-watches used had been checked. Two other cases were withdrawn.
The trail was over a distance of 405 chains, in which there were various intersections and three warning notices regarding speed. It was alleged in the case heard today that the defendant drove over the distance at a speed exceeding 50 miles an hour.
