NOT SENT FROM HEAVEN
MEMBER S OPINION OF BANK DIRECTORS j “ORDINARY INDIVIDUALS” THE SUX'S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Wed. In supporting the proposal set out in the Bank of New Zealand Amendment Bill of Mr. F. Langstone (Labour —Waimarino) that the Government’s representatives on ’ the bank’s directorate should not be directors or shareholders in any other bank or insurance company or any other public or private commercial company, Mr. E. J. Howard (Labour— Christchurch East) claimed in the House this evening that capable directors could be found without drawing from the ranks of business men. The Bill was taken in committee shortly after the House began its evening sitting and several speakers had commented unfavourably on the restrictions on (he election of 'directors suggested in the measure before Mr. Howard spoke. It might be assumed. Mr. Howard said, from what the previous speak- ! ers had said, that the directors were Heaven-sent men, but they were
nothing of the sort. They were just ordinary individuals. “I travelled to Samoa with a number of them,” he said, “and they were very ordinary men. They came to the table just as hurriedly as I did when the dinner bell rang. (Laughter.) They gazed up at the coconuts growing on the trees and were just as astonished as I was to see them growing there. There’s nothing different about them from anyone else, unless they’ve got tails they don’t reveal.” The House roared. #
