LATE SIR MAUI POMARE CEREMONIES AT WAIKANAE Press Association WELLINGTON, "Wednesday. The Xgatitoa tribe began its mourn, mg today when the ashes of the I*?# Sir Maui Pomare arrived at Waikan*f The obsequies were marked bv a wealth of Maori ritual and the firing o' a single rifle shot as the remains of th= leader approached the pa. A special carriage which bore the ashes was taken to Waikanae as part of the Main Trunk express and there shunted on to a lop line. The carved casket was placed on a wooden carrier which was borne by four Maoris, a fifth Maori led, grasping a taiaha. or ceremonial spear, and slowly thev bor* the ashes away. Lady Pomare and her children followed while other mourners and several members of Parliament brought up the rear. On the march to the meeting house of Hie tribe crowds of wailing women waving green branches met the cortege. The ashes will remain in a tent among fern leaves until midnight tomorrow, when they will be moved to Waitara.
