MAUNGANUI STOWAWAY FINED TWO OTHERS REMANDED Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. As the result of a cable from Sydney the police yesterday searched the
Maunganui for Roy William Callaghan, aged 20, and Thomas Portlock, aged 18. While the search was in progress Frederick Parkes, aged 19, was also discovered. All were charged today with stowing away. Parkes claimed to be a New Zealander who had been in Australia two years. In reply to the magistrate he said he had travelled from Sydney as a third-class passenger without being asked for his ticket. He was ready to pay his fare if he ha', been asked. Parkes, who had £lO 7s in his possession when arrested, was fined £2 and ordered to pay the tare £7 10s. In the cases of the other men the police asked for a remand and this was granted.
