WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
PROVINCIAL MEETINGS The meeting of the Hobsonville Women’s Institute was held recently, several visitors being present. Mrs. W. Ockleston presided. The remits for the annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes were discussed in readiness for the meeting next month. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Miss Armistead and Mrs. Ockleston. MEETING AT BIRKDALE The monthly meeting of the Birkdale Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs. Gilpin presiding. The remits for the forthcoming annual meeting of the Auckland Federation were discussed. Mrs. Gilpin was elected delegate to the Dominion Conference to be held in Wellington in October. Mrs. T\ A. Clarke and Mrs. .1. Clark gave recitations, and Miss A. Collins a song. The hostesses were Mrs. Hewson, Mrs. Hughes, Miss M. Hughes and Miss Imrie. HUNTLY TO AFFILIATE The monthly meeting of the TlunUy Women’s Institute was held in the Presbyterian Hall. Mrs. .1. Dodds presided over a good attendance and extended a welcome to new members. It was proposed that the monthly meeting be held every third Thursday in the month in the Presbyterian Hall. It was decided to affiliate with the. Auckland branch of the institute as soon as possible, and in order to do this a membership list was compiled.
After other business had been dealt with an interesting sketch was read by Mrs. Chisholm entitled. “The Life of Elizabeth Fry.” A. musical parcel was afterwards handqd round and caused much amusement. Supper was served and formed a brief interlude, the hostesses for the evening being Mesdames Dodds and Cairns. Community singing and recitations followed.
MAN A WAKE BRANCH Members of the Manawahe Women’s Institute met recently, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent. Mrs. Rendall presided. It was decided/ to send delegates to the Auckland Provincial Federation Council meeting in September: also to the Dominion Conference/ of Women’s Institutes to be held in Wellington during October.
A demonstration on how to net a hammock was carried out by Mrs. Meredith. A competition for the best article made from a tin or bottle brought forth many unique entries.
The meeting closed with tea served by Mrs. Seabourne and the Misses M. and L. Rendall. MEETING AT GREENHITHE The monthly meeting of the Greenhitlie Institute was held in the local hall, Miss Crozier presiding. Mrs. Bishop, of Birkdale, gave a. dressmaking demonstration which was much appreciated. Mrs. Bartlett, also of Birkdale, sang two solos. Mrs. Sexton accompanied her on the piano. Resolutions of the various institutes to be presented at the coming bi-an-nual conference were dealt with. The delegates appointed are Mrs. Coulam and Mrs. Pitcher. Candidates for the executive committee of the Auckland Provincial Women’s institute were considered also. Topics for discussion or debate for next month’s programme were chosen from the resolutions. A sub-committee was formed for arranging the programme for the institute’s birthday party in November. Mesdames Coulam and Sexton were the hostesses.
