SPELLING BEE AT IYA
Miss Brian Gardner, the winner of the spelling bee broadcast from IYA lust evening, leaves for Wellington this evening in order to compete as representative of Auckland in a similar contest at 2YA tomorrow*. There were 28 competitors in the IY’A contest, 13 women and 15 men, and they included a schoolmaster, a doctor. a dergyman, an accountant, and a number of other professional people. The adjudicator said the standard of accuracy shown throughout the test was surprisingly high and tlio task of reducing the number of competitors in the preliminary rounds proved unexpectedly arduous. Miss Gardner went through the preliminary and final tests without a mistake. ENGAGEMENTS The engagement Is announced of Roseland Kathleen Ella, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Sutcliffe, Marama Terrace, Birkenhead, to Sidney Albert, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Price, of Paddington, London. Til© engagement is announced of Sheila Kathleen, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Piper, of Auckland, to Kenneth Henry Stuart, only son of Mrs. C. S. Cavq, of Auckland. The engagement is announced of Mary Patricia, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Campbell, Taylor’s Road, Mount Albert, late of Dargaville, to Claude Relton, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Barker, of Campbell Road, Ellcrslie. WAIKATO NOTES Miss C. McMaster, of Marton, is the guest of Mrs. E. C. Brewis, in Hamilton. # Mrs. Lane, of Tauranga, is the guest of Mrs. Gibbs, in Hamilton. Miss I. Marshall, of Whangarei, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. G. Teasdale, in To Awamutu. * * * Mrs. G. Selden, of Hamilton, is a visitor to Tauranga. MATAMATA NOTES Mrs. E. C. Banks, Burwood Road, has left on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. E. Dobson, Island Bay, Wellington. Mrs. and Miss McPhee,- Whangarei, are the guests of Mrs. A. Finlayson, Matamata. Miss R.
