DICKENS EVENING
NAVY LEAGUE SOCIAL The Navy League held a most enjoyable social in the club rooms in Simich’s Buildings last evening. The programme was contributed by members of the Dickens Fellowship. Air. Preston Chambers, the vicepresident, presided. The items consisted of extracts from many of the famous author’s works, and all were read by keen lovers of Dickens, who from their study and understanding of his writing infused into the lines all his atmosphere and versatility. The readings which were chosen embraced many phases of Dickens’s work, the delightful whimsicality and humour of “Pickwick Papers,” and the pathos and tragedy of “David Copperfield.” being admirably interpreted. The excerpts were given by Airs. C. YVolsten- Croft, who read Meargeant Buzz-Fuzz’s speech from “Pickwick Papers”; Miss Statham, who read “The Visit to Manor Farm,” from “Pickwick Papers”; Miss Robinson, “Quilp Returns from the Dead,” from “The Old Curiosity Shop”; Mrs. It. Culpan, “Charity Pecksniff’s Wedding,” from “Alartin Chuzzlewitt”; Air. T. Clarkson. “The Storm,” from “David Copperfield";' Air. Townley Little, “The Dinner Party,” from “David Copperfield”; Air. R. Norris, “Our Curate,” from “Sketches by Boz”; Air. Kidson, “Wemmick’s Wedding,” from “Great Expectations.”
At the conclusion of the programme supper was served by the ladies’ committee of the Navy League.
