Flat Racing Season Opens In Earnest
Prospects for Dannevirke Tomorrow
By
"EARLY BIRD."
The fiat racing season will commence in earnest at Dannevirke tomorrow, on the occasion of the opening of the Dannevirke Racing Club’s Spring fixture, which will be followed the next day by tho Dannevirke Hunt Club’s annual gathering. A strong feature of the card for tomorrow is the large number of three-year-olds engaged, among them some notable performers last season, such as Si m ha. Jayson, Tripping, Kahikatoa, Jennv Diver, My Own and Lineage. There will ho no dearth of runners, for the acceptances received are excellent. A start is to be na&de with the Glengarry Hack Hurdles The class is far from strong, perhaps the best being Call Again. Dobbin. .Juggle, Break o’ Day, Whakaue, Masher, Tall Timber and Wlienuatonga. There is little form to go upon, but perhaps the favourites will be: WI-lAKAUE TALL TIMBER Tiratu Maiden Stakes Here again there is not much to go upon. Jayson showed some promise and at Trent ham last month she wont a couple of fair races. Others likely .aro Masterton, Valpine, Souchong, Roundelay. Hawkshaw, Black Acre, Painting, Derry Belle, .and Winacre, and there is every prospect of a surprise. Most money may be forthcoming for JAYSON WIN ACRE. Neagle Handicap Better known is the class engaged in the principal event. Marjoram has raced consistently of late, and with all his weight is going to take some stopping. Hynanna, if but a shadow of his former self, would make no race of it; it is said that he is coming back to form. Black Mint has disappointed of late, and Blimp has run several excellent races in much better fields. Blimp if he will do his best may win. Courageous is a sticker, and Balloon and Queen’s Choice are fair sorts in good nick. Chopin ran well at Hastings on Saturday, and he is one to be respected. Shrewd was a winner there, and he did it well too, and his return to form may be a forerunner to other successes. Te Awha completes the field. The public fancies may include MARJORAM CHOPIN. Umutaoroa Hack Handicap Most interest will be focussed upon the form of Simba, whose form just twelve months ago proved him one of
ur smartest youngsters, after which le went light off. Tie is a class three-rear-old. Taranto has racing con-
dition, and another good juvenile is Tripping. Cloyne, Repay. Acmil, and Ex Dono may be the pick of the remainder. Favouritism may rest between these: SIMBA TRIPPING. Hack Steeplechase On recent showings one cannot overlook Sir .Moment, Handy, the Hastings winner Risk, Kovno, Mandate, and High Heather. Risk has now a big weight to carry, and at the impost he has in this race he may find something too good for him. The best backed will probably be SIR MOMENT RISK. President’s Hack Handicap Kahikatoa and Jenny Diver are good juveniles, and the latter is brilliant, and a filly likely to reach a high class before the new season is much farther advanced. Desert Lad and Fitz Quex, are the best of the others in what is admittedly a weak field, so the three-year-olds' will have their chance. Fancies will be JENNY DIVER KAHIKATOA. RuaHine Handicap The sprint in this case extends to seven furlongs, so that the middle distance performers will be given • a chance. Last season My Own was a good three-year-old, and this term he promises to develop into a more than
useful handicap performer. Lineage is a classic winner, and then there is the Manawatu dual winner. Broad Acre, and Royal Damon. Those mentioned appeal most, with a preference for MY OWN BROAD ACRE. Harris Hack Handicap Shortly disapppointed at Awapuni after showing form at Trentham, but the small field will be a lot in his favour. Kilorel stays on, and Arrowhead has had the racing. Repay Avon well last Saturday at Hastings. but the others are not greatly fancied. The public may plump for SHORTLY ARROWHEAD. The folloAving are some of the riding engagements announced for tomorrow:—• H. Goldfinch.—Simba, Jenny Diver and My Own. H. W. Wiggins.—Roundelay, Maui and Footpad. B. H. Morris.—Historic. H. Gordon.—Risk. J. McDowell.—Lady Alophen. W. Broughton.—Rule Britannia, Star of Gold (second day). T. Metcalf.—Te Awha. Desert Lad. W. McDonald.—Magic Land (second day). Airfpr~-
T. Green. —Tripping, Fitz Quex, Miss Gossip. Arch\ria.
