HOUSE DESTROYED
OCCUPANTS’ CLOSE CALL MAPI’S HAIR BURNED A five-roomed house in Favona Road, Mangere, owned by Mr. and Mrs. S. Moore, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning and the occupants had a narrow escape from being trapped by the flames. Mrs. Moore was first ’ awakened by the crashing of glass, and she found the house to be a mass of flames. It was alight from front to rear, and apparently had been burning some time before it Was discovered. She immediately aroused her husband, who aroused another occupant, Mr. Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Moore fought their way through the flames and smoke, and made their escape from the front door. Mr. Moore's hair was completely singed off his head. Mr. Scott’s escape was cut off, both from the front and back of the house, and he made an exit from his bedroom window.
None of the occupants saved any belongings. The Favona district is not reticulated with a water system, and within half an hour of the occupants escape, the building was burned to the ground. A two-seater motor-car, which was parked alongside the house in the drive, was also destroyed.
