LACK OF CARGOES

FIVE STEAMERS IDLE Five of the Union Steam Ship Company’s cargo steamers are laid up at Auckland and others are idle at Southern ports, owing to the slackness in the shipping trade. The vessels out of commission at Auckland are the Kurow, Kairanga, Kaimiro, Waitemata and Waitomo. The Waitomo and Kairanga have been at anchorage at Hobson Bay for a long time, but the Waitemata and Kurow have been undergoing overhaul, which is now completed. Both vessels are to be taken to the anchorage. The Kaimiro arrived from Westport on Saturday and her crew is being paid off. She has been withdrawn from commission until trade improves.
