Pakuranga Hunt Meeting Was a Big Success
Large Attendance and Keen Racing
The conditions under which the p Pakuranga Hunt Club launched the first race meeting in the province of the new season at Ellerslie on Saturday could not have been improved upon. The weather was warm during the early part of the day, and this encouraged a large number of racegoers to this famous course. Excellent going was provided, albeit the turf was soft, but not so bad as in previous seasons. The racing was firstclass, and was a splendid augury for further good sport this racing term, in keeping with the many stirring contests witnessed over the past twelve months. Many Fall Probably the most exciting race of the day was the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. three of the fancied candidates falling at the third to last fence, the second obstacle on the hill the last time. Spalpiko, who had beaten all but Pennyplain in the Hunters’ Hurdles, was left
well clear as a result, and from this out it was easy money. Odin chased
him home and Mashoor, remounted, got third money. J. Burgess, rider of Freyja in this event, received a broken collarbone. The Jellicoe Handicap went to High Pitch, who scored convincingly over Pompeius and Standfast, while ihe Dunedin Handicap fell to the consistent Chromadyne, Lucy Rose and Sea Cob both being handy ~t<s him. A Doubly Winner Pennyplain captured the Hunters’ Hurdles, the second race on the programme, and later came out in the seventh event, the Ladies’ Bracelet, for amateur riders, scoring again. The Quin Abbey gelding looks like developing into one of our best jumpers next winter, for he has fencing ability and plenty of pace. Surprise winners were Scaramouche and Waimuri, both of which were at double figure quotations. The totalisator handled .C 34,871 h for the day, against £40,988 on this day twelve months ago, a decrease of £6,116*. A word must be sakl for the excellent manner in which the meeting was conducted, the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, and his executive having all the arrangements well forward. Notes on the racing and detailed results are given below. Hunters’ Steeplechase Freyja, £940, was first choice, with Marita, £603, next in demand, the ultimate winner, Scaramouche, carrying £221 and returning a double-figure price. At the second fence Absent lost his rider, but continued in the running to be a source of annoyance to the others. At this stage Scaramouche was leading Cullgie, General Maniapoto. Marita, Foxhound and the favourite, but at the stand double Cullgie was in the van, followed by Scax-a-mouche, Foxhound, Marita, Lovely Boy and Freyja. Scaramouche disat the back, where Foxhound came to grief, and the pair were clear of Lovely Boy, Freyja and Marita going up the hill, Cullgie falling at the second fence, while Genei’ai Maniapoto was pulled up. Scai’amouche was first into the straight and going on won by three lengths from the favourite, who was 10 lengths in front of Lovely Boy. Then came Marita and Solanio. Hunters’ Hurdles
The bulk of the money was for Pennyplain, who carried £1,034, Spalpiko £334 and Marble Mount £278 being best backed of the others. Marble Mount and Pennyplain led over the first liui'dle, where Kingsland fell. At the obstacle in front of the stand the favourite was in front from Twinkler, Marble Mount, Spalpiko, Thanks and Oscar (who came to grief). Along the back Pennyplain sailed along in front of Spalpiko, Twinkler and Marble Mount fell at the last jump, where Spalpiko was up with Pennyplain. Over the last bit the favourite did best and drew away again to win bv two and a-half lengths, while Twinkler was a dozen lengths away, third. Temperature was fourth and then came Kiwinui, Day Lass, Small Goods and Wan Lu. The winner’ was at a very short pi'ice. Sylvia Park Handicap Tho Sun £6ll was first choice over Kai'apoti £532, but the dividend payers were Waimuri £2lB, and Volimond £331. Before the start Waimuri dislodged her rider, but when the tapes were released she led out from Frothblower, Crown Arch, Sir Mond, Gay Cockade and Volimond. At the half mile, Frothblower was in charge from Waimuri, Crown Arch, Gay Cockade, Wild Country, Lady Court, *Biddy Comet, Cruachan, Sub Editor and The Sun. There was no change entering the straight, where the favourite was well placed on the rails, but he was brought round on the outer. Frothblower retired in the run home, and Volimond challenged Waimuri, but the filly filing on well to win by three parts of a length. A similar distance back came Wild Country, with The Sun, who finished wide out, close up fourth. Then followed Gay Cockade, Patutahi. Cruachan, Sub Editor and Karapoti. The winner was at double figures. Jellicoe Handicap True Blood £1,260. Lee £7 42, Standfast £629 and High Pitch £557 were the prime fancies, and the lastnamed succeeded in winning from an
outsider in Pompeius £164. Standfast and Maori Boy were chopped out at the start, Desert Glow leading from Hannibal and Nancy Lee. Hannibal was in cha.rge along the back from Desert Glow, Daylight, Nancy Lee, Bennie, Pompeius, Barometer and High Pitch, with Standfast and Sir Archie well back, the last-named, however, moving up fast. Hannibal still held command at the five, but before the straight was reached Maori Boy headed him and was the first to turn for home from Hannibal, Desert Glow, Barometer, Pompeius and High Pitch, rnsido the distance Barometer, Pompeius, High Pitch and Standfast, who came from the rear of the field, put in
claims and in a hard iinisli High Pitch prevailed by three-quarters of a length from Pomeius, with the unlucky Standfast a neck away, third. Then came Barometer, Maori Boy, Desert Glow,
Xancy Lee. Hannibal, Daylight, True Blood and Bennie. Hunt Cup
I St. Warrigal £ 970, Odin-Freyja I bracket *B6O, and Mashoor £B5l was tho order of the leading trio on the machine, but the winner was Spalpiko, who carried £5Bl. Roger, the '‘trotting" steeplechaser, was first over the water jump from Spalpiko, St. Warrigal, Mashoor and Freyja, but before going far the favourite was in the van followed by Scaramouche, and when the stands were reached again this pair was showing the way to Spalpiko, Freyja and Odin, Roger falling at the stone wall. Scaramouche ran to the lead along the back, and up the hill was clear of Mashoor, St. Warrigal, Spalpiko and Odin. At tho first obstacle on the hill Freyja fell, and the next saw Scaramouche come to grief and bring down St. Warrigal. Mashoor soon afterward fell on the fiat, but was quickly remounted. Spalpiko went on with a good lead from Odin, and bolding the advantage won by four lengths. Mashoor was third 150 yards back, with Absent, the only other one to complete the Auckland Handicap Most money was forthcoming for Rosshiro (£1,332) and Catoma (£1,314), with Trishna (£754) also in demand. Sulla was first to show out from Vanessa, Sir Mond and Rosshire, but along the back Vanessa went to tho bead of affairs from Sulla and Catoma, who came through quickly , Rosshire, Carlaris, Sir Mond and Principal. Catoma led round tho turn from Vanessa, Rosshire, Principal, Day Form and Arch Eagle. Catoma and Principal finished strongly, the former getting the decision by a neck, with Carlaris four lengths away third. Then came Arch Eagle, Trishna, Sir Mond and Sulla. The favourite’s form can be discounted, for he was not well ridden. Ladies' Bracelet Spirited betting saw Pennyplain, £1,357, Fall o’ the Year £1,310 and Dominican £l,OOl, finding most favour, and tho public was not far out as the trio fought out a desperate finish. Dominican was the early leader from Pennyplain, Royal Survey, Temperature and Fall o’ the Year, but at the six furlongs Pennyplain had taken chargo from Small Goods, Dominican, Fall o’ the Year, Temperature and Royal Survey. Fall o’ the Year was on terms with Pennyplain as the home turn was negotiated, with Catullus, Dominican and Day Lass handy, but Pennyplain did best in the race for the judge to win from Dominican by a nec.k, with Fall o’ the Year a head away third. Day Lass was a good fourth and then came Catullus, Royal Survey and Oscar. Dominican and Day Lass were both unlucky. Dunedin Handicap Chromadyne (£1,439) and Gold Money (£1.213) carried the bulk of investments, the favourite winning nicely to give R. Hannon his third success for the day. Chropiadvne, on the inside, was first away with Valroe, Gold Money, Sea Cob and Awamutu in close attendance. A little farther on Awamutu joined the favourite in the van and thev turned for home together in advance of Sea Cob Valroe, White Wings, Royal Ruler, Gold Money, and Grand Spirit. Chromadyne finished well to score bv threequarters of a length from Lucy Rose, who came fast in the straight, with Sea Cob a neck away third, followed by Awamutu. Royal Ruler, White Wings, Foot Rule, Grand Spirit, King's Speech, Valroe and Envoy. GREENMOUNT HUNTERS STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP Of £200; about 2-i miles. 7 SCARAMOUCHE (R.
