NORTH ISLAND MOTORISTS
CONFERENCE OF UNION rress Association WANGANUI, Friday. The annual conference of the North Island Motor Union was opened today, Mr. W. O’Callaghan presiding over a gathering of 30 delegates. A welcome was extended by the deputy-mayor, Mr. G. Darbyshire. Criticism was levelled at the Government’s action in connection with the measures in the Finance Bill regarding the Main Highways Board funds by Mr. A. E. Ansel], M.P., speaking as a motorist. The free grants fo the board now had to meet interest and sinking fund. Such an action in the business code of ethics would be dishonourable, but the Government had allowed necessity to over-rule. The speaker urged the union to get together with the counties and farmers and light the measure before it came before the House next year to be reconsidered. He described the latest developments as the most serious crisis that had ever confronted the motorists of the Dominion. The conference later empowered the executive to take action. Mr. W. O’Callaghan was elected president and Dr. Porrit, of Wanganui, and Mr. A. J. Toogood, of Wellington, vice-presidents.
