Many motorists paid the penalty for excessive pressure on the accelei'ator at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when the Hamilton Borough Council reaped a harvest in fines. Most of the offences consisted of speeding over town intersections, the speed varying from 32 to 45 m.p.h. * u + The Frankton Queen Carnival was brought to a successful conclusion on Thursday evening, when Miss M. Xelson, the Suburban candidate,. was crowned amid a picturesque ceremony at the Frankton Town Hall. As a result of the campaign the funds of St. George’s Anglican Church have benefited considerably, as about £750 was raised and the expenses were small. For failing to eradicate blackberry from his property at Maramarua, John. King, a farmer, was fined £5, with costs, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. It was stated that defendant had ignored repeated warnings. * * * An enjoyable reading of A. A. Milne's "Mr. Pirn Passes By” was given by the St. George’s Dramatic Club this week. The cast was:—Mr. Pirn, Mr. H. K. Gaze; George. Mr. W. J. King; Olivia, i Mrs. F. Bullock; Lady Marden. Mrs. J. Prenton; Brian. Mr. R. Clough;; Dinah, Miss Robins: Anne, Miss Ashman. * * * “It is only right that the public* should know how the fruit they buy is sometimes sold,” remarked Mr. W >"- vern Wilson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when fining Yip Young, a Chinese fruiterer, of Hamilton. £ 1 with costs, for sleeping in his shop. “Publication of his name will do more good than a heavy penalty.” he added. Hedaralli Chhajoomia, an Indian fruiterer, was fined IDs and costs for leaving his yard in a filthy state. + m m Advice that its quota of £IOO toward the proposed bath was in hand was received from the Old Boys’ Association of the Hamilton High School at the Board of Governors’ meeting yesterday. The sum of £IOO has already been donated by the school and it was decided to apply to the Government Cotf a subs id v on the combined amounts. * * * The annual road race of the Marisf Brothers’ School was won by J. Kane. The contest for the intermediate cup resulted in a tie between C. Peacocke and R. Clarkin. W. Webb won tho junior cup. Early next term girls of the Hamil* ton High School, who have been learning singing during the year, will Present Gilbert and Sullivan’s delightful opera “lolanthe.”
