MORRINSVILLE NOTES

The recently-enlarged Te Puninga Hall at the end of No. S road, was officially opened by Mr. E. Lye, M.P. Several car-loads of Morrinsville, Tatuanui and Te Aroha people were present. The earlier portion of the evening was taken up with musical items by performers from Morrinsville and Te Puninga School Although directors of dairy companies have prophesied that farmers will probably not get more than Is 3d a pound for butter-fat this season, a herd of dairy cows offered at a Morrinsville clearing sale yesterday sold at prices which were very satisfactory from the sellers’ point of view. The average for 52 cows was £ll 10s, and two sold for £l7 10s. Since August 1 about 10,000 cattle and calves, mostly bobby calves, have been railed from the Morrinsville, Tatuanui, Piako, Kiwitahi, Walton and Waharoa stations. The increase in stock traffic on the railways as the bobby calf season advances is shown by the fact that 10,000 calves and cattle were railed in June and 2,500 in July and 10,000 in August to date. ■Very few sales of farms have been reported in the Morrinsville district this winter, in marked contrast to last year, when a good many properties changed hands. The tightness of money is given as one reason, buyers not being able to get finance as easily as in previous years. One Morrinsville land agent says there are more buyers than sellers this year, and most farmers are reluctant to sell because they could not find more productive land in any other district. About 100 lambs were born on a train conveying several trucks of ewes from Taneatua to Morrinsville on Tuesday, en route to Rotorua. Those who trucked the ewes were prepared for emergencies, and spread hay in the trucks and engaged a spare truck. "When the trucks were shunted on to the siding at Morrinsville Junction the ewes were untrucked and spent the night in the station yard, which was spread with hay. In the morning the ewes were put aboard the trucks and the lambs into the spare trucks. In the night the number of lambs had increased to 140. * * *> One of the oldest buildings in Morrinsville, a cottage in Studholme Street, between Mr. W'. Timmins’s butchery shop and Mr. H. McConnell’s garage, was demolished this week, as it had become too old for habitation. The cottage was built about 50 years ago, soon after the Lockerbie Estate was acquired by Messrs. T. and S. Morrin, after whom Morrinsville was named. At a meeting last evening of the members of the Reserves Committee of the Morrinsville Borough Council and representatives of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce and Morrinsville School Committee, it was unani- > mously resolved to take steps to provide a children’s playground in a een- > tral position in the town. A sub-com-mittee was set up to select a suitable site. It was resolved to conduct a queen carnival to raise the necessary funds.
