FAIRY CRADLES

Do you ever think that flowers are made for any special purpose? I always feel sure that the big Scotch thistles, with their soft, downy hearts, are the fairy babies* cradles, and I think that the pricks are there to stop anybody doing any harm, or awaking the fairy babies from their dreams. I would love to sleep in a thistle: It would be so soft and cosy. And it would be lovely to be rocked to sleep by the gentle breezes swaying the plant. It would be delightful to awaken as the sun rose, and to peep out of a pretty purple flower and see the golden-tinted clouds slowly drifting apart, letting the sun burst forth in all its splendour. Alison Milscm, aged 12.
