In the Market Place
POOR APPLE STOCKS PRICES REMAIN LOW Prices for apples are still remaining low and no appreciable change Has been noted over a period of weeks. Large quantities are now being offered, but many lines are in a wastey condition and do not meet with a ready sale. Pears, too, are ruling at past rates. There was a large shipment of Australian citrus fruits this week, mandarins being well in excess of the demand. Prices realised will not pay the Sydney shippers. A further small quantity is on board the Aorangi, due on Sunday. Locally grown passions have increased in prices. Lemons and tree torfiatoes are slow of sale, hothouse tomatoes being passed on at good prices, as very few are now coming forward. Oranges and bananas are in fair demand. Other lines are unchanged. Luck eggs have been scarce for some weeks, but are now being offered in increasing numbers. This morning prices in all grades fell one penny a dozen. There hag been no appreciable increase in price for farmers’ butter in response to the increase for the factory product last Tuesday, and supplies are meeting the demand easily at ruling rates. The first shipment of American onions will arrive in Auckland next week. The vegetable market here is well supplied with cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce and celery, and quantities of new potatoes are fairly large. A good supply of poultry at today’s auction met with a keen demand, with prices on a level with last quotations. Cockerels were not very plentiful, and high values were returned for well-finished birds. Hens of all breeds held their values well. Lucks were in heavy supply and prices advanced, the quality showing a decided improvement on recent offerings, Quotations: FRUIT Apples.—Delicious, 4s to 8s; Dougherty, 4s to 7s 6d; Sturmers, 6s to 8s; Munroes, 4s to 6s Gd; Ballarats, condition poor, 4s to ss; Grannie Smith, 7s 6d to 9s Gd; Jonathans, condition poor, 3s to 5s Lears.—Coles, 4s to 8s; Nelis, 6s to 9s; P.
