FEW SENIOR CLUBS

INITIAL MOVE MADE IN LEAGUE CODE FAR-REACHING RESULTS A movement which may have a far-reaching effect on the standard and control of the Rugby League code in Auckland and New Zealand was initiated at the meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Football League last evening. The move is, in. effect, for the elimination of the senior B grade and the substitution of a reserve senior grade for it, as in Australia, and the reduction of the number of senior A teams from eight, as at present, to seven or perhaps six. The question was introduced by Mr. L. Binns, of the New Zealand Council, who said that the object of the suggestion was the raising of the standard of club football. He said that any move by Auckland would be watched by the rest of the Dominion. Several other speakers representing both senior A and senior B clubs were all in favour of the new scheme. Only one member of the committee expressed himself against the change, and that only until he knew more about it. The reception accorded the move surprised even its sponsors, and eventually a committee consisting of the chairman, Mr. George Rhodes, the secretary. Mr. Ivan Culpan, and Messrs. W. J. Davidson, W. Clark, E. i Redwood and C. Adamson * was appointed to meet a sub-committee of the New Zealand Council and consider the scheme in greater detail and report back to the management committee and later the clubs themselves. CITY CLUB’S PROTEST A letter was received from the City Rovers Club protesting against the Devonport Club playing L. Simons on Saturday. City considered that he was I still a member of the Wellington 1 Ilugby League. The Advisory Committee refused to uphold the protest, whereupon Mr. W. J. Davidson, the City delegate, intimated that his club would carry an appeal to the council of the New Zealand Rugby League this evening. The chairman, Mr. George Rhodes, said that he believed Simons was still a member of the Devonport Club, as lie had not been transferred to Wellington. He was convinced that Simons was eligible to play for Devonport without a transfer from Wellington. He had been a member of the Devonport Club all along. No doubt be deserved some punishment for playing in Wellington without a transfer. A Member: It seems to be a pretty loose system when a club can do that. Mr. Rhodes: Yes. Simons played for Devonport on Saturday, when the Devonport men defeated City by 11 points to 0. Should the appeal be upheld it will have a big effect on the championship.
