CAR THEFT CHARGE FAILS

STOLEN VEHICLE HIRED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. At the criminal sessions 3 3 indictments were presented to the Grand Jury, and true bills returned in all cases The charge of the theft of a car valued at £IOO, the property of Edgar Henry Smith, was laid against Ronald Edward Morrison. It was alleged that Smith left the car in a street in the city on the evening of July 5. He went back three hours later, when the car was missing. Morrison told a detective that he met a stranger named MacGregor in the city that night, and that Morrison told MacGregor that his own car had broken down and ho had to get to Nelson. MacGregor told him that he would hire him a car on condition that he returned it to Tlmaru. MacGregor went away and came back with Smith’s car.

Accused drove it all night and finally ran it over a bank near Kaikoura. He was himself injured and taken to hospital.

The jury returned a verdict of not jfuiltv.
