STOCK PRICES FIRM
WESTFIELD REVIEWED MOVEMENTS IN THE SOUTH BY R.W.C. Firm markets were recorded in most sections at the principal stock ! selling centres of the Dominion yesterday. At Westfield a small yarding o£ fat cattle was made up of some of the choicest quality steer beef of the season; the cow and heifer offering, on the other hand, contained some of the poorest quality seen in the yards this season. Prices were very firm, and showed a slight advance on late rates, best ox making up to 41s; average prime ox made from 37s to 39s a hundred; best young cow and heifer made up to 3Ss; ordinary cow made up from -Ss to 34k a hundred. Tlie ox beet offering was drawn from ovijf a wide range, the best quality coming from tlie Waerenga Valiev one lino of 14 head from that district a ,‘i Col '," t . ol JJ ‘ Kccd averaging jl 17 . 1 ‘Wst average this season for a. line or that size. Fat Pigs Easier
The fat pig section had a decidedly weaker tone, particularly in regard to baconers, which sold round the equivalent of from 43d to a shade over 5d a lb; porkers sold at from 6Jd to a shade over 7d a lb, according to quality and size. The high prices for pork which have ruled over the past few months have turned many of the smaller butchers off this class of trade, except in cases where they are more or less compelled to carry a little in stock. The position has been accentuated during the past month by the increased efforts being made by holders of frozen pork to reduce stocks before the summer. Buyers for the bacon trade are not anxious to buy at the moment, and tho combined result is an easier market. Good quality baconers at one part of the sale yesterday sold at £3. Choppers made ££ 10s to £ 4 ss; heavy baconers, 13 4s to £3 11s; light and medium, .£2 16s to £3 2s; heavy porkers, £2 10s to £2 14s; medium, £2 5s to £2 8s; light, £2 to £2 3s; small and unfinished. £1 15s to £ 1 17s.
