President Hoover has announced that acute conditions brought about by the drought have been reported from approximately 300 counties, Avitb the crops almost completely ruined in most of them. “In those areas,” he said, “the destruction of crops has proceeded to a point beyond any great degree of recovery, although the pasturage should improve. “It must be borne in mind that from the relief point of view the burden of the problem in the acute area will slioav very much more vividly over the winter at the present moment. “I have received from all sections of the drought, area high appreciation of the railways for their prompt and constructive action. It was a notable ad and showed courageous co-operation undertaken in the face of a seriouslv reduced income due to the depression ” FARMERS MUST WAIT Mr. Hoover and the Secretary for Agriculture, Mr. A. M. Hyde, are confronted with further demands for Fed eral aid as the stricken farmers continue to organise a relief programme. The former Governor of Virginia, Mr. IT. F. Byrd, has appealed for relief for Virginia, stating that the damages in his State amount to more than £20,000,000. partly owing to the loss of 800,000 tons of hay and 35,000,000 bushels of maize. Mr. Hyde has published a list of 173 additional counties in Arkansas. Missouri, Illinois, Virginia and Ohio, Avhere there is an emergency. Mr. Byrd says one of the most serious aspects of the situation lies in the fact that relief for farmers without credit facilities will have to await legislation, and Congress will not be in session until December.
