PENWOMEN’S ARTS AND CRAFTS CIRCLE
DR. MILDRED STALEY IS SPEAKER AT ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON Dr. Mildred Staley gave an interesting talk upon Eastern pictures and scenes at an afternoon organised yesterday by Mrs. S. Wright (convener) and members of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the Penwomen's League. A number of paintings of the northwest frontier of India, of mountain fastnesses in Tibet, and Kashmir, and of several hill stations, were shown, and various anecdotes told of the circumstances in which they were painted. The speaker said much difficulty was encountered in the execution of two or three paintings, as to stand or sit for any length of time was to invite the sniping of the wild tribesmen of the hills. Dr. Staley also spoke of her medical work in the Straits Settlement, and of the way in which it gradually gained ground among the Malayans in spite of strong prejudice on their part. She was thanked for her talk. by Mrs. Mary Stuart Boyd. Some interesting models of famous sites and relics were also shown by Miss Melville.
