RAILWAY DISMISSALS
EX-SERVICE MEN SEEK ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATION TO RESCUE | The case of ex-soldiers among those i employees In the railway goods sheds who are affected by the change in status from "permanent casuals” to "emergency casuals” is being taken up by the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The majority of the 73 men who received notice of the change are returned soldiers and a telegram was sent on their behalf yesterday to the Rt. Hon. G. J. Coates. Leader of the Opposition, as a result of which Mr. Coates asked the Minister of Railways, the Hon. NV. A. Veitch, whether it was the policy of the Government to dismiss from the Railway Department in Auckland returned soldiers who were originall v designated "permanent casuals,”' but who were now designated “emergency casuals.” Mr. Coates also asked whether there would be preference for returned soldiers as a good many of them had been given jobs when they returned from the front. The Minister replied that they would still be given preference if they had been given preference before, a reply that did not satisfy Mr. Coates. A representative of the men conferred with Mr. E. M. Sharp, secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, this morning and the association intends getting into immediate communication with the Minister of Railways and sending a copy of its letter to Mr. Coates.
