STEAMER-LINE SUBSIDY
CESSATION ADVOCATED Press Association INVERCARGILL, Sunday. „ A recommendation to the Government to discontinue the subsidy for the South Island to Melbourne shipping service was approved unanimously at a meeting of the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. Tlio opinion was expressed that the value of the service to Now Zealand did not warrant the expenditure of public money involved, more particularly at a time when stringent economy was necessary. “It is absurd to talk of renewing tho subsidy," said Mr. W. J. A. McGregor, who introduced the matter. The Union Steam Ship Company had stated that, notwithstanding the subsidy of £39,000. the service had shown a loss of £9,800, but he could not understand how this came about.
