“DUMMY” COMMITTEES
MORE CHARGES AGAINST POWER BOARD AUDITOR-GENERAL’S LETTER Further comments and insinuations were aired at a meeting of the Waitemata Electric Power Board this morning when the recent charges of waste and extravagance made by Mr. W. B. Darlow were again brought before the notice of members. When a letter was received from the Controller and Auditor-General at Wellington regarding the setting up of certain special committees which had investigated the charges, the chairman, Mr. G. Trevithick, moved it be taken in committee. This action’was questioned by Mr. Darlow, the chairman then explaining that his ruling was a correct one. The personnel of the committees had not been decided in open board and the findings did not have to be discussed out of committee. ‘‘The whole trouble has arisen from my charges of some months ago,” declared Mr. Darlow. ‘‘The board has no light to stifle this letter which should, in the public interest, be allowed to proceed in the open.” Mr. S. E. Kennings here pointed out that the question could be brought up again in general business after it had been dealt with in committee, hut this did not satisfy Mr. Darlow, who accused tho Board of setting up “dummy” committees to deal with the charges. The chairman w r ould not allow r this statement on a point of order. There
were ten honourable men on the board, he said, arici it was his duty to protect them. His own motives could not be questioned. Such statements should not be made in public. He was conversant with the contents of the letter and had no doubt that the board would be able to supply a satisfactory answer. In the meantime it was better that his ruling should be allowed to proceed. On the motion being put Mr. Harlow alone dissented. The letter was then discussed in committee. Later it was stated that the recommendathe special committees regarding changes in administration found necessary as a result of complaints made, had all been given effect to.
